Evaluating Project Outcomes
There are really two perspectives when it comes to measuring the success of the project.
- Did the project meet the requirements of the owner for aesthetics, function, cost, quality, and time?
- Did the contractor make a fair profit as planned?
If the answer to both questions is yes, then the project team can acknowledge a win all around. However, there are many steps involved in delivering a project from an idea to occupancy—and many people involved, as well. Sometimes this process goes smoothly; other times, the process is a long, bumpy ride. Many factors influence the outcome, but there are fundamentally two criteria that contribute to the overall success:
- Good design; and
- Excellent construction management.
Let me put it this way: even the best construction management team will have a hard time delivering a bad design to the owner without painful change orders and schedule delays. However, even a great design runs the risk of suffering under the leadership of a mediocre construction management team. Either way, I hope you can grasp how important it is for the owner to make smart choices all along the way by selecting the best design and the best construction team available. Squeezing the design team up front by low-balling their fee in an effort to save money will only prove to be extremely expensive when the design has to be remedied in the field. Likewise, unrealistic expectations regarding schedule, cost, or quality frustrate the construction team and often result in needless conflict and dissension.
So the evaluating project outcomes, success, failure and everything in between needs to monitor the schedule, cost and quality on every stage of Project.
